Friends/AEPi Eta Chi and Detroit Alumni Brothers/Movie Group/Allnet-Global Crossing Alumni

Leon Cooperman, Eta Chi '64, was honored by Hunter College with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities. Lee was once described as being a "mensch" when he was at Hunter and still is. We are all proud of Lee and the honor that he has received. Well deserved Dr. Cooperman :)

Roberta and Cliff lash have had a second grandchild - Matthew Benjamin Lash, born in Grand Rapids on August 17th. Mother, Kelley, Daddy Jason and Baby are all doing great. Grandma and Grandpa are still flying high!

We spend the Fourth of July weekend in Saugatuck and South Haven< Michigan with Cliff and Roberta Lash and Linda and Joe Warshawsky. Linda knew both Caryn and the Lashes when we all lived in Grand Rapids. Linda and Joe built a home in South Haven in a beautiful wooded area and kept it totally natural with an amazing variety of birds and wildlife outside their family room window - including one fawn we had a staring contest with. Caryn and the Lashes remember spending summers in South Haven so we got to see a lot of "historic" - at least to them - sites and had an amazing time.

The Movie Group lost one of its oldest and most liked members this summer. George Cantor had been fighting cancer for a number of years and throughout his battle maintained is humor and love of Detroit. Whenever he was at the Movie Group dinners his stories and discussions were very special to hear. George had been a reporter and feature writer for the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press and Jewish News during his long career. He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from a Michigan Newswriters organization and is shortly to be inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. We will miss you, George.

Mark and Margo Hartzman came in for the weekend of Caryn's birthday and joined us and the Lashes, Mansons, Kantors, Elyse Gilbert, Linda Berman and Susan Bilsky and Randy Rossman. Dinner out and then home for cake and coffee. Considering we moved only thirteen days before we did pretty good - all unpacked and everything hung and strung or whatever:

Margo, Caryn, Marcia, Roberta and in the second picture Linda Caryn and Susan. And the third photo, Linda Kantor and Caryn. Now there were guys there as well but I used my editorial discretion on picking photos (all are on my Facebook page)

Had lunch with Kira Kociszewski - long overdue and all is well with her., we must do it again but sooner, Kira. Spoke to Ray Imhoff and owe him a call and we must get together for lunch as well. And finally on the allnet side I had someone from AT&T out to check a phone line and mentioned i worked for Global Crossing and he said his dad was a Vice President there "years" ago. Penny Blaha, and a lot of others might remember him, one of the truly nice men in the Allnet organization: David Patterson. As head of IT he was my boss when I joined that department. until he retired.

The annual AEPi Alumni dinner will become a brunch this year with spouses of brothers invited and according to Howard Gurwin response has been quite good and really does include most of the spouses. The Brunch will be held on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and details are available from either Don Ruddick or Howard or Mike Anspach (who sent out an e-mail to the Detroit Alumni list.).

Brother Steve Bernstein was honored my the Michigan State Chapter of Hillel for his years of dedicated work both to Hillel and AEPi at MSU but in the metro Detroit Area at a recent Shabbat Hillel Dinner. Steve, an attorney in Farmington Hills, is a former president of AEPi International and legal counsel to the Fraternity. He has been active as an Alumni and Fraternity officer since graduation in the 1970's.
